In part 2 of our series of advice on dealing with the current challenging period, here are some important tips to ensure you stay mentally healthy and make the most out of this time.
Use this time of peace and quiet to develop yourself
Have you ever thought to yourself, “when I have the time I’ll work on ‘X’ area of my life”?
Well, you have time now right?
If you have ever spent extended periods of time alone, whether that’s on a trip, long walks, or if you live alone, you have likely experienced moments of pure ‘clarity’ where you figure out exactly what you need to work on and the solution to it, as if it were right in front of you all this time.
This will be different for everyone but how about you start working on the following to dramatically improve your life;
- Write out your long-term goals: Those that don’t have a clear target in life are destined to aimlessly meander around. As things quiet down, sit down and go through each area of your life – career/business, finances, health and relationships, and really think about where you want to be 1, 3 and 5 years down the track – then write it out.There is no need to be perfect, you can always update them as you go along.What’s important is that you clarify what’s important to you and have a clear sense of direction in life especially during this time of uncertainty.
- ‘Focus’ on your important work or projects: In our ‘regular’ life we are often bombarded with distractions on a daily basis. Post your adjustment period, now is the time to double down and focus on completing your highest priority work or which you’ve been putting off. You’ll find that without all the usual noise, this will likely be a lot easier to achieve and in less time than you thought.
- Expand your knowledge or learn a new skill: All the information we need is out there in the form of books, videos, online courses and articles – if there is something that you’ve been meaning to learn but never had the time for, take this opportunity and get started!
Spend time on hobbies (or take up new ones)
There are many hobbies that don’t require other people to be involved like playing the guitar, singing, dancing or photography.
Get creative and find activities you enjoy doing – aside from passing the time, it helps give you perspective and puts you in a frame of mind to stay positive.
Seek professional help when you need it
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious or have serious challenges you’re facing – NEVER go at it alone and seek a psychologist or a trusted person to talk to.
This is especially true in difficult times like now where many people are losing their jobs, struggling to find meaning in their lives, or facing relationship issues that get exacerbated when forced to stay at home or be alone.
The best option is sometimes to be guided by a mental health professional who is trained and experienced in helping many others who have been in your shoes. You’re not alone.
Regardless of who you speak to, make sure you get the help you need and know that no one’s problems are unique – someone, if not most of us have been through similar issues to those you are currently facing. Simply seeking advice and help puts things in perspective.
If you found these tips helpful and valuable, share it with your friends, family and colleagues.
